Battle of the Lip Crayons

Hello, again! I hope everyone is nearing the end of Christmas shopping. It's a mad house out there! I'm currently breaking from wrapping to get this post up.

For the past year or so, I've fallen into the "lip crayon" beauty craze. No matter what the brand is, it seems I have to give any type of crayon a chance. It's safe to say I've collected numerous formulas, colors, and brands over the past year. So, I wanted to break each of them down and give you my thoughts on them. Enjoy!

I guess it's not obvious that I really...REALLY like these, huh? The Chubby Stick Intense was probably one of my first experiences with a "high end" twistable lip crayon. I have to be honest, I immediately became obsessed! The color payoff, wearability, color selection....everything is just fabulous on these!

Keep in mind, Clinique does have a regular "Chubby Stick" line which aren't as pigmented as the "Intense" line. I'm more of a fan of the "Intense" Chubby Sticks because I feel like if I'm shelling out $17 for a lip product, I want it to show up (they used to be $16). They're hard to beat!
The Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Sticks are definitely one of the drugstore's bet kept secrets. The reason I'm such a big fan of this particular lip crayon is because the formula is so moisturizing and nourishing! All of the crayons do contain shimmer, which I don't mind. There's not one bad thing I have to say about them.

They have a sheer to medium color pay off, depending on the color you choose. They're perfect for every day wear and smell amazing!
Pop Beauty is a brand I became acquainted to via Ipsy. After receiving many of their products in my bags, I have to be honest, I have never found a product that has "wowed" me - and this lip crayon is no exception.

The application is smooth, I'll give it that. However, the staying power just wasn't there for me. It was almost like a cheap satin finish lip balm that came off within an hour. I've searched online for the individual price of these and apparently, they are only sold in a kit for $25. I'll save my money for a couple of Chubby Sticks.
This was a new drugstore product I spotted a couple days ago. NYC has jumped on the crayon wagon! I found this shade to be unique because it appears to be super pale. However, it actually gives your lips a bit of color, and in my opinion, a really nice wearable nude. You're going to hate me but I completely forgot the name and can't find it online (I'm out of town and left it at my apartment).

However, if you spot these in your local drugstore and may be interested in this color, just look for the nudest one! Overall I was pretty pleased with this crayon! The application was smooth, color pay off was just as good as the Neutrogena, and there was a nice color selection. Plus, they were only a little over $3!
I'm such a huge fan of Jordana's products. At some of the most affordable prices, Jordana manages to deliver great staples I use in my makeup collection. I was so excited when they came out with these lip crayons!

The formulas wear amazingly! I wouldn't say they are super moisturizing but they aren't drying either. "Honey Love" is one of my favorite shades, and boy, do they last on your lips! Definitely give these a shot next time you're in Walgreens!
Finally, what some would say are the "first ever" drugstore lip crayon... The Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains. I had to admit, I went crazy when I saw these were out. The concept had never really hit the drugstore shelves before.

First of all, if you aren't a fan of "minty" scents, you probably won't like these. They have a very distinct mint smell and flavor, without the tingle. The color pay off can vary depending on the shades you pick. I like them, but I don't "love" them. I've found that they can be a bit drying for my lips. However, I think you'll enjoy the variety of colors if you do decided to give them a shot. Once Jordana came out with the Twist & Shines, I think the Kissable Balm Stains were out of luck!
For the last high end lip crayon, I'm moving into Tarte, a brand in which you all know I LOVE. Let's get straight to the point...these are fabulous! The variety of finishes, colors, and formulas they come in are never ending!

Everything is there, the color payoff, the staying power, the gorgeous colors, *AMAZEBALLS MOMENT*. The only downfall of these is of course, the price. I normally try to get them in a value set so I don't have to pay $24 for one lip crayon (crazy I know...but they're worth it) You'll find yourself becoming addicted to them quickly!

Overall:
Now that you've heard my "lip crayon spill", I want to make an overall recommendation for drugstore and overall recommendation for high end.

Drugstore:
  • Jordana Twist & Shines - There's just something about an awesomely priced product that delivers in color payoff and staying power - these have both! Plus, the affordability factor gives you options to play around with different colors without having to compromise for bad formulas ;)
High End:
  • Tarte LipSurgence - I have to admit, Clinique Chubby Stick Intense was a close second. However, based on the color selections and overall formulas, Tarte steals the show! Seriously, you have to check out all the different colors, formulas, and finishes. You won't be disappointed, I promise!
Have you tried any of these lippies before? Let me know below!

As always, thanks for reading!
Until next time...

  2. This is such a great post! I have yet to try the Jordana lip crayons, but I agree with you, Tarte are my favorite as far as high end brands.
