First Impression: Kat Von D "Lock It" Powder Foundation

I've once again ended up on the same quest to find my perfect compact powder foundation. This last trip to Sephora led me to the Kat Von D "Lock It" Powder Foundation. I've heard that this is some serious coverage stuff and after a few swatches, I could tell the quality was great!

Now, I want to be clear: this is just my first impression. I've only worn it for two days and I know that I have definitely chosen the wrong shade (which sucks but I can work with it).

*Update* - I have since purchased shade "Medium #52" which is a lot more neutral and suited for my skin tone.
I chose the shade "Medium 54" which has a very peachy undertone to it. I generally stick with neutral to warm undertones and this color doesn't appear the best on my skin. I think it's also a little too dark for me currently.

Quality - Absolutely amazing texture. You barely have to tap your brush into the product and it is instantly covered with smooth powder. It's highly pigmented and has a buttery smooth feel.

Application - I tried the powder with a powder brush and a damp beauty blender. The beauty blender didn't work out for me because it made the powder appear dark on my skin. I was able to build up the product to a medium coverage with the brush I used (Bare Minerals Flawless Finish Brush) but would still like to experiment with stiffer brushes to see if it can give more coverage.

Finish - I would consider this powder to have a totally matte finish. I didn't detect any "glow" or luminous finish to it. Surprisingly, it didn't look awful on my dry skin (as most matte products do).

Overall - Right now I am just so "in between" on my verdict! I think the shade I chose is definitely a little off. I'm very pleased with packaging and quality of the product and I think I would be a little more sold if the shade wasn't as peachy.

*Another update* - After purchasing a better shade, I can't say that I was blown away. The coverage was not what I was expecting and I felt that it worked better as a finishing powder/mattifying powder. The shade ranges are also tricky - for example "Medium #53" is lighter than "Medium #52"(the shade I purchased).

Also, I would not describe "Medium #52" as a medium shade at all. I am able to wear it at my lightest skin tone (MAC NW20/Bare Minerals "Fairly Light" for reference). I am way more impressed with my Bare Minerals Original Foundation and MAC Studio Fix Powder.

Have you guys tried this powder foundation? Any application techniques you'd recommend to help me "love" it more? Thanks for reading!

  1. I haven't tried this one, but I'm very interested! I use MAC Studio Fix Powder + Foundation and love it! I was switching foundations constantly, but once I started using it about 4 years ago, I've stayed with it. I try other foundations every once in awhile, but I go back to Studio Fix every time! I'm VERY oily, so powder foundations seem to work better for me. I don't know how you manage them with dry skin though - if my skin has any flakiness whatsoever, my foundation accents it and I end up looking like the Crypt Keeper! LOL

  2. It does seem to be 100% matte finish and I do think you look much better with a more dewy foundation. Just stick to your original bareminerals, girl.

  3. I disagree! Medium is light!!! It's very light. That's why I hate this whole fair light medium deep dark thing. The light fair medium are the same complexion. Any who it's crazy that medium 54 to you is dark when it's not far from medium 52. How are you a nc20 wearing medium 52? Shouldn't you try light 44!!!?? I see ppl paler and darker than you wear medium 52 so to each their own. Do what u please, but my nc35 friend wears medium 52 and it's flawless so that's why I chime in ;)
